You know I photograph newborns but I never forget about the other VIPs….new big brothers and sisters!
A new baby in the house is a very exciting time especially for your other children. If the siblings are very young, it can be confusing and strange for them at first but they soon embrace their new role and the love they develop for their younger brother and sister will last a lifetime.
When I photograph newborns with older siblings I always plan their shots first. Toddlers especially can get bored easily and it’s always a good idea to get those shots done and then they are free to either be picked up by Grandparents or even go for a walk with Daddy down to Ouseburn Farm which is literally a minutes walk from my studio (and free!)
Having their photograph taken can feel very scary for children so I take it easy and plan very simple shots. If siblings are very young I do not ask them to hold baby as they can forget the newborn is a real baby and not a doll! Sometimes I create the set up, do two shots, one with baby and one without and wave my Photoshop magic afterwards. When siblings are older they adore holding baby and can take more direction so there are a few more options for photos.
I always like siblings to be dressed in neutral colours and sometimes with boys it looks great with just their trousers on. If you have a specific idea or colour theme just let me know and I can create something around your vision.
If you are expecting a baby and have a very excited new brother or sister to be then why not let me capture those very first weeks of togetherness. More information can be found on my website Tiny Baby Studio. I look forward to meeting you all!
