Yesterday morning I stepped outside the front door and my first thought was “Autumn is here!”… it was probably something to do with the coolness of the air, or the dew on the grass or even the slight orange hue on the leaves on the trees. It’s my favourite time of year! I’ve even been known to style a newborn shoot in my favourite autumnal colours!

The kids have gone back to school, winter is waiting in the wings and you might even be thinking of Christmas, but we still have Halloween to celebrate. Over the years Halloween has become a much bigger celebration and, if my Facebook page is anything to go by, you are all amazing at thinking up fabulous outfits and really enjoying it.

I remember in the 80s we used to have Turnips (not pumpkins) and that smell is still very evocative even if I do remember the sore hands from hollowing them out…Pumpkins are so much easier!  My Halloween outfit consisted of a bin liner and a cheap witches hat from the Newsagents on the corner. We knocked on doors saying “The sky is blue, The grass is green, have you got a penny for Halloween”. No Trick or Treating back in the 80s!

There are lots of amazing activities you can get involved in around the North East. I asked some of my friends to let me know their favourite places at Halloween and here are some top recommendations!

Crook Hall – A beautiful house and gardens in Durham that has special Halloween events for children (and adults!!). Trick or Treat your way into the witches cauldron, listen to spooky stories or find elves on a treasure hunt. Click here for more information.

Alnwick Gardens – Always a firm favourite and their special events are always popular. At The Alnwick Garden be careful where you step. You may see a hag who’s walking her pet. There are spiders, witches, devils and more. Enter with caution and dare to explore? If you are brave and like a good spook, come to the trail and take a good look! Click here to find out more 

Brockbushes –  A thriving rural Retail Centre with an award winning Farm Shop, Tea Room, Pick Your Own and Garden/Gift Centre in Corbridge . At Halloween they have a pumpkin patch and scary evening walks too! Click here for more information

Washington Wetlands – Check out their Nature Fright Nights! Create your own lantern before taking a night time stroll around the wonderful wetlands, detecting bats in the creepy woods and listen to exciting stories by lamplight. Mix your very own spell potion and enjoy a spooky cookie and delicious hot chocolate. Click here for more information

Discovery Museum – In Newcastle City Centre, their “Spooky Night at the Museum” event is best suited to under 7s. Come to the Museum in your best Halloween dress for a frighteningly fun evening including a devilish disco, creepy crafts, bugs and stuff to handle, Fancy Dress competition and face painting. No tricks, just treats! Gibside – Every day of October half-term there’s a family activity on from 11am – 4pm. Try the grizzly Halloween trail and on Monday 24 October there’ll be pumpkin carving and making super creepy lanterns. Click here for more information

Wallington Hall – A stunning place to visit at anytime of year but Autumn really makes this beauty spot look spectacular. Enjoy autumn fun at Wallington this half-term with indoor activities and outdoor adventures every day, from Halloween crafts and pumpkin carving to leaf collecting and wild art. Beamish Hall – Another firm favourite with locals. Halloween evenings at Beamish, now in their seventh year, are sure to give you a Halloween fright night you’ll never forget. With The Town, Pit Village, Pockerley Waggonway and Pockerley Old Hall swamped with petrifying creatures, only the brave will dare to knock on the doors to trick or treat…Click here for more information

The Baltic – For only a fiver per child you can delve into a world of materials and make and create unique costumes with BALTIC artists to take home. Suitable from age 3 so perfect for littles ones too. Click here for more information

Belsay Hall – Possibly one of my favourite places in the North East!  Follow their Pumpkin trail to find beautiful, elaborate hand carved pumpkins hiding around the site or drop in to the Hall for some craft activities! Let your little ones explore the large cellars…perfect for running around in and letting off some steam. Click here for more information

Seven Stories – Don’t be a scaredy cat this October, head to Seven Stories for spooktacular events for the whole family to enjoy. The very youngest reader to the most avid bookworm is invited to take part in Seven Stories’ packed season of events.
