Cake Smash photo shoots are a fantastic way of celebrating your baby’s first birthday. Not only do we have lots of fun but you get fantastic photos to cherish this milestone. One of the best parts of my job is getting to see babies grow and it’s extra special when my newborns return for their sitter portraits or for their first birthday.

So what happens at these sessions? Is it messy? Will I get ‘normal’ photos? These are some of the questions I get asked and I hope this blog post answers all the questions.

When you book a First Birthday Session with Tiny Baby Studio, I will ask you to bring a couple of outfit changes for baby. There is time for 2-3 outfit changes and we can change the backdrop colour too and this gives you a lot of variety in your final gallery.

One year olds can be very wary as they arrive so I take it very slowly and allow them time to become accustomed to the surroundings and to relax. It’s always interesting to find out about their development as some are walking and some are yet to take their first steps and this can influence my choice of props.

I also get asked if siblings can join in too… and the answer is always YES!!

And I would always encourage parents to have some photos taken with the birthday boy or girl. I know many of you hate having your photos taken but it’s incredibly important to exist in photos for your child to look back on.

And then it’s time for the cake!!! At this point we change baby into their cake smash outfit… either one of mine or something parents have brought and I decorate the set with bunting and balloons. Finally we add baby and then… well to be honest the reaction differs from baby to baby! I’ve had some that have literally face planted the cake and some who are a lot more wary but once they get a taste of that yummy cake they tend to want more! Now please be assured we do not allow baby to eat loads of cake! Parents often help baby to smash up the cake and wooden spoons are on hand to help for those who don’t like messy hands.

And once we’ve finished with the cake we can end with a lovely relaxing bath to get rid of all the cake!
